Lebanon Desk – Law Firm in Beirut

Lebanon is a country in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East and became independent in 1943 after 20 years of French occupation. The capital of the country is Beirut. As in antiquity, Lebanon’s location makes it a vital crossroads between the East and the West. The road network that crosses Lebanon includes international highways, which are part of the major land routes connecting Europe with the Arab countries and the East.

Lebanon has a competitive free market regime and a strong laissez-faire trade tradition. Lebanon’s economy is service-oriented while the main growth sectors include the banking sector and tourism. At the same time, there are no restrictions on the movement of currency or capital.

Beirut’s port and airport and the country’s free economic and exchange systems, favorable interest rates and banking privacy (according to the Swiss model) contributed to Lebanon’s dominance in trade and services, especially before the start of the country’s civil war.

Prior to the Lebanese civil war, the development of the services sector — which generated the vast majority of national income and employed the largest percentage of the workforce — was mainly related to international transport and trade and Beirut’s position as a center of international banks and tourism. The abundance of natural landscapes, historical sites, hotels, bars, nightclubs, restaurants, beach and mountain resorts, outdoor sports facilities and international cultural festivals in Lebanon has traditionally contributed to the preservation of its most important industries of the country all year round.

The climate and the relatively abundant water supply favor farming on mountain slopes and by the sea. Vegetables, bananas and citrus fruits are grown, as well as olives, grapes, tobacco, figs and almonds. In addition, the breeding of poultry, goats, sheep and cattle is an important source of agricultural income.

Lebanon’s mineral resources are scarce but there are significant deposits of iron ore and lignite, stone quarries, sand suitable for glass and lime.

Leading industries in Lebanon include the production of food products, cement, bricks and ceramics, wood and wood products and textiles.
